International artistes dominate Spotify lists of Top 10 songs in Jamaica

Spotify has released its annual Spotify Wrapped, a campaign that allows Spotify users to view a compilation of data about their activity on the platform over the past year, then invites them to share it on social media.

The compilation features one Jamaican artiste in the Top 10 of the Most Played Songs list and three in the Top 10 Most Played Artistes list.

The year 2021’s most played artiste in Jamaica is international sensation Drake. Alkaline and Vybz Kartel come in at #2 and #3 respectively. Among those listed in the top 50 are Shenseea (43), Chronic Law (34), Dexta Daps (32), Popcaan (15) and Skillibeng, who makes his first ever appearance on Spotify’s Wrapped at #7.

The most played songs list for 2021 saw only one Jamaican, Intence, with his popular single, Yahoo Boyz.

American rapper Doja Cat dominated the list with a total of three songs appearing in the #1, #2 and #9 spots. Outside of the top 10, the rapper, who emerged on the scene in 2019, has four additional songs in the top 50.

Seventy five songs make up the total number of the Top Songs list with Spice’s Go Down Deh featuring Shaggy and Sean Paul, Skillibeng’s Crocodile TeethCoke and Not, Dexta Daps’ Call Me If and Breaking News, Masicka’s I Wish and Skeng’s  Gvnman Shift appearing on the list.

Although Jamaica’s lists are dominated by international artistes, Spotify’s Communications Manager, New Markets, Julia Levander says nonetheless it is encouraging that some of the island’s local artistes appeared on each list as Trinidad did not boast any of their local artistes for either of that country’s top 10 lists.

For the period January 1 to November 27, Spotify summarizes the streams for each song and each artiste using all versions of the song. For the former, the company calculates the total streams for all songs by the artiste while, for the Top Artistes list, a combined stream for all their songs is calculated.
